Lower New River - Class II-V

The New River Gorge is one of the most popular full day whitewater rafting trips in the United States. Enjoy a mix of exciting white water rapids, calm pools for swimming and games, lush scenery and historic sites. Wildlife can often be spotted on the river banks and in the water and sky. The New River can be run almost year round and at a variety of different water levels.

Spring and early summer are times when you will likely find higher water levels, and the New River is famous for big splashy waves, and crashing whitewater hits. The New River is comercially rafted up to a flow of 30,000 cubic feet per second, which is an amazing amount of water. Those lucky enough to catch a high water run through the New River Gorge experience a unique and truly thrilling adventure. At the high water cut-off, it takes only about 45 minutes to run this 8 mile section of river.

In July and August, the river typically runs at lower water levels, and the rapids get rocky and technical requiring more maneuvering and precision. The water is cool and relaxing on warm summer days and there is plenty of time to swim. Sometimes the water level is right for surfing on the river in a variety of different locations. It is debatable who enjoys surfing more: the guides or the guests.

There are two Class V rapids in the New River Gorge that are a highlight of many rafting trips. The Keeneys is the first of these and is broken up into three main sections. Rafters will have to paddle hard through crashing waves and around numerous obstacles to avoid a visit to "The Meat Grinder". Double-Z Rapid is the second Class V in the Gorge and can be described as tight and technical. Rafters will have to pay close attention to their guide and employ a number of precise maneuvers to avoid "Table Rock" and "The Butcher's Block".

A rafting trip on the New River terminates at Fayette Station, underneath the beautiful New River Gorge Bridge, which spans 876 feet above the river. Rafts typically hold up to eight passengers and provide a safe and enjoyable ride down the river. A buffet style lunch is provided along with all necessary rafting equipment.

Whitewater rafting on West Virginia's New River is a classic adventure that you don’t want to miss! This high-volume river courses through a narrow canyon and drops 240 feet in one 14-mile stretch creating rapids with names such as Surprise, The Keeneys, Double Z and Millers Folly.  From intense high water runs in the spring, featuring roller-coaster wave trains and giant holes, to the more technical challenge of summer levels where surfing is king and getting wet is part of the fun we’ll make sure you walk away with a smile before setting foot on dry land at the end of your trip.
